In the I2S course the focus is on practical teamwork and the implementation of an idea - teaching principles to which SCE aspires in all its courses and qualifications. For a whole semester students of Munich University of Applied Sciences have time to focus on a current topic as part of the 12S – Idea-to-Solution® seminar designed by SCE. The task involves far more than just developing an innovative and marketable idea: students have to produce a functioning prototype along with a strong marketing plan.

An exemplary semester showed three mixed teams from the disciplines of mechanical engineering and economic engineering working on the topic of “Garden Tools”. The results of their efforts throughout the semester were really quite wonderful and certainly convinced the audience of the students’ ingenuity. Their inventions included an illuminated garden pillar with an integrated sprinkler function, a tool to gather various types of fruit and an accessory for long-handled garden tools to enable them to be used with only one hand. The teams were primarily supervised by Professor Sailer and Professor Russo, both of whom are well aware of the high standards required by this course. As Professor Sailer commented, “Our I2S tasks do present a major challenge and demand serious application on the part of the students, particularly in the relatively short winter semester”.

Parallel to this, and under the supervision of Professor Greiner, two teams from the Masters degree course in commercial IT developed software solutions on the topic “Service ideas in Web 2.0”. One group developed an internet platform that helped simplify the organisation of private parties. The other team designed an internet exchange forum to find room space for, or other people interested in, all types of leisure activities.
